Leonard Qylafi (b.1980) is an Albanian visual artist graduated by the Academy of Fine Arts in Tirana. His practice explores several mediums such as painting, video, photography and music.

Leonard has been actively present in  the local and international art scene since his graduation. He represented Albania at the 57th edition of Venice Biennale (2017), and during the last years his works were exhibited at: NiMAC Museum Cyprus (2018), MuCEM, Marseilles, Izolyatsia, Kiev (2016); the 55th October Salon, Belgrade (2014); Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2012); MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Arts, Debrecen, Hungary (2011); and the TICAB-Tirana International  Biennial Contemporary Art (2009) among other places. He has been part of several residency programs such as: NIFCA-Nordic Institute of Contemporary Art, Helsinki,Finland; ISCP New York ,USA; KKA-KulturKontakt, Austria and T.I.C.A-Tirana Institute for Contemporary Art. He is the winner of Ardhje Award for Albanian Young Artists in 2008. Lives and works in Tirana, Albania.

Statement

Deeply linked with personal experience Leonard’s artworks are a process of research and mediation between subjects and mediums. By using knowledge and skills the artist produces new narratives through elaboration of  both  aesthetic and content of subjects he uses as basic material for his projects.
